Welcome to the website of the Electrochemistry Group at the Faculty of Chemistry, Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland).
Our Group conducts research mainly based on the electrochemical synthesis and complex characterization of nanostructural materials, such as nanoporous metal oxides or highly ordered metallic and polymer nanowires.
Our research interests are also focused on application capabilities of synthesized materials, starting from photoelectrochemical activity of nanostructural semiconductive oxides, electrochemical sensors based on metallic nanowires, up to biomedical applications of anodic TiO2 layers.
Recently, we have started investigating materials with potential for energy storage. More detailed information on our research works can be found on this website in the Research bookmark.
Currently, there are 7 PhD theses conducted in our Group. Moreover, we are leading 8 research projects. Our Group is intensively collaborating with many research groups from Poland and abroad (Portugal, Germany, USA, Ukraine), as well as with the industry.
Our Group conducts also commissioned measurements (more information can be found in the Equipment bookmark).

Dr. Biswaranjan Das Mohapatra has joined our group. During his 2-years stay he will be working on his project entilted Bridging the understanding between oxygen electrocatalysis activity and electrode stability in acidic medium: An approach towards designing low-cost pem fuel cells and water electrolyzers financed by NCN Poland. It is our pleasure to inform that our colleague, Anna Brudzisz, has been awarded by the Polish Electroplating Society with the prof. Tadeusz Żak award for her PhD dissertation realized in our Group entitled Application of anodic aluminum oxide membranes obtained by a voltage detachment for the preparation of Ag and AgPd nanostructured electrodes and their usage for aliphatic halides reduction.

The Anthropocene PRA under the strategic programme Excellence Initiative at the Jagiellonian University announced the results of the Young Labs’ (YL) call. Among projects qualified for financing, there was also one from our Group:
Project Towards understanding electrode processes taking place during the electrodeposition of semiconductors from the group of phosphides, sulfides, and selenides – a new class of catalytic materials (coordinator A. Brzózka) will be realized in our Group between 2021 and 2023.

Our Group is among the participants of COST Action Network for research, innovation and product development on porous semiconductors and oxides which was approved by the COST Committee of Senior Officials.

Dr Oleg Tkachenko (V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Kharkiv, Ukraine) has joined our group within Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood - Coimbra Group. During the next month he will be performed a research on electrochemical deposition of materials that can be used as electrocatalysts in electrochemical water splitting reaction.

The book entitled Nanostructured Anodic Metal Oxides: Synthesis and Applications edited by prof. G. Sulka will be publised by Elsevier on March 1st. The book consists of 13 chapters authored by recognized specialists in the field of anodic fabrication of nanostructured oxide materials including the members of our Group. National Agency for Academic Exchange announced the results of the contest for projects in the framework of bilateral exchange program between the Poland and Ukraine. Among the grants that received funding was our project Nanostructured nickel and palladium‐containing composites based on anodic nanoporous alumina for selective catalytic hydrogenation of organic compounds which will be realized together with L.V. Pisarzhevskii Institute of Physical Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The list of all qualified projects can be found here.

dr Magdalena Jarosz attended a "Short course on Electrochemically Active Biofilms" at the Washington State University, Pullman, WA. During the course she learnt the basics of the electrochemistry for biofilm examination, as well as new, advanced electrochemical techniques and the methods of biofilm growth controll. The course will help her to continue her research in the Sonata 13 grant.

During those days we visited dr Lifeng Liu at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) Braga, Portugal. During the visit we discussed the details of our joint research and took part in the workshop Solar Fuel Production Based on Nanostructured Photoelectrodes and Catalysts.
October 11th-12th 2018
During those days, our Team was organizing the second edition of the conference that was dedicated for students and PhD students who are working with functional nanostrutured materials (2nd International Workshop on Functional Nanostructured Materials). This years edition was devoted to three main topics:
1. Nanostructured biomaterials
2. Nanomaterials for energy conversion and storage
3. Electrochemistry for nanomaterials and nanomaterials for electrochemistry
The conference held more than 80 scientists from Poland and abroad, including some great specialist from each field that gave an invited lectures.
Moreover, workshops on writing scientific papers and choice of a proper journal (led by the Elsevier representative), and on preparing samples for certain measurements were conducted. Finally, a discussion panel led by dr Krzysztof Fic on writing good research proposal was included in the programm.

At the beginning of September our Team had a pleasure to participate in the 69th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry, which is the biggest electrochemical conference in the world! This year's edition was held in beautiful Bologna. During the conference, not only we had an opportunity to learn a lot, meet other scientists from all over the world, but also to experience the wonderful city of Bologna and taste great italian food!

Joanna Grudzień, our PhD student, was participating in the iPROMEDAI Training School on Antimicrobial Medical Devices at the University Medical Centre in Amsterdam (Holland). Training School was organized as a part of COST programme. During the 4-day post-academic course, she was gaining knowledge and abilities on research and characterization of antibacterial materials based on microbiological tests.

Prof. Grzegorz Sulka became a member of the Pol-Stor-En Polish Scientific Consortium council.
The Pol-Stor-En consortium includes: Jagiellonian University in Krakow, AGH University of Science and Technology, Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals (Central Laboratory of Batteries and Cells), Gdańsk University of Technology, Poznań University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, and Warsaw University.

National Science Center announced the results of the HARMONIA 9 and SONATA 13 proposals. Among projects qualified for financing, there were two from our Group:
HARMONIA 9 - Synthesis and characterization of the nanomaterials for the energetics applications will be coordinated by G. Sulka and will be conducted in our Group between 2018 and 2021.
SONATA 13 - Bioelectrodes based on environmentally friendly lactic acid bacteria - physicochemical, biochemical and electrochemical characterization for their potential application in bioelectrochemical systems will be coordinated by M. Jarosz and will also be conducted in our Group in the years 2018–2021.

We have finally finished relocation to the new building of Faculty of Chemistry. The new address is Cracow, Gronostajowa 2 (the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the JU Revival).

From January till July 2017, our PhD student Karolina Syrek, was on a six-month long internship form the ETIUDA 4 programme (financed from the National Science Center). She spent that time in a group of prof. Joaquin Rodriguez-Lopez (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). During her stay in the United States, Karolina was examining nanostructured oxide electrodes by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electrochemical spectroscopy (SECM).

OPUS 12 - Nanostructured anodic TiO2 and WO3 modified/doped with transition metal oxides as photoanodes for electrocatalytic and sensing applications coordinated by Grzegorz Sulka will be conducted in the years 2017-2020.
PRELUDIUM 12 - Modified anodic tin oxide layers with complex internal architecture as promising photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting coordinated by Karolina Gawlak will be realized in the years 2017-2020.
